Vehicle Fire
Wednesday, December 30,2009
Around 6:45am today, Police received a report of a fire at the Central Auto Garage on Parsons Road in Pembroke. On arrival Police officers observed four vehicles extensively damaged by fire. The Bermuda Fire & Rescue Service also attended the scene and extinguished the blaze. The vehicles were not operational at the time and were reportedly used for spare parts. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Home Invasion

Around 12:30am today, Police received a report of a home invasion at a Sylvan Dell Road, Paget residence. It appears that two unknown men forced their way into the home, with one brandishing what appeared to be a firearm. The occupants of the house, a 42 year old Paget woman, a 30 year old Pembroke woman and a 20 year old Paget man, were not injured. The offenders then made good their escape.

Burglary - Around 7:30am today, Police received a report of a burglary at a Harrington Sound Road, Smith’s parish residence. The complainant stated that sometime overnight an unknown culprit or culprits gained entry into the home. The culprit(s) stole a 32” Samsung flat screen TV and a Dell laptop computer from the lower apartment as well as a black laptop computer, a Canon digital camera and personal items from the main house. Inquiries into this incident are underway.

Policing for New Year’s Eve

The Bermuda Police Service continues to advise the motoring public to slow down and to drive as well as ride responsibly on the island’s roads. Additionally, we urge those traveling in cars to use their seatbelts at all times and make sure any children traveling in the vehicle are appropriately restrained. Reported Gunshots - Around 7:05am on Sunday, Police received a report of what were believed to be gunshots in the North Shore Road/Band Room Lane, Pembroke area. Officers attended the scene a short time later and made a thorough search of the vicinity – however, after completing the search and speaking with area residents, nothing was found to substantiate the gunshot reports. Inquiries into this incident are underway.

Burglary - Around 3:40am today, Police were on mobile patrol in St. George’s when they received a report of a burglary at Robertson’s Drug Store. On arrival officers discovered an unknown man inside the premises. The suspect, a 24 year old St. George’s man, attempted to escape but was quickly apprehended inside the building and arrested in connection with the burglary. A 19 year old St. George’s man found acting suspiciously near the drug store was also arrested on an outstanding warrant. Inquiries into this incident are underway. Arrest

Fugitive from Supreme Court Trial Arrested

28 year old Stephen Thompson of Pembroke was arrested at the L. F. Wade International Airport at 10:40pm on Tuesday, December 22nd 2009 after returning to Bermuda – one year since he fled the jurisdiction while a defendant in a December 2008 Supreme Court wounding trial.

Robbery - Around 8:20pm on Tuesday, Police received a report of a robbery at the St. George’s Club. It appears that the victim, a 26 year old Pembroke man, was walking along Rose Hill Street around 8:15pm that day when he was accosted by two unknown men, one brandishing what appeared to be a firearm. The offenders demanded cash, with one of them removing the victim’s wallet and a Blackberry cellular phone before both men made good their escape on foot towards the golf course. The wallet contained a quantity of cash and personal items. The Pembroke man was apparently uninjured.

Thief Has a Change of Heart

Thieves by definition take things – but rarely do they return them. However, it appears that the Christmas spirit has encouraged one thief to have a change of heart. You may remember that a burglary was committed at the St. George’s Community Centre overnight on Wednesday, November 18th 2009 by an unknown culprit. The culprit stole a black 32” Sony TV, a black Sony DVD player and two Dell computers.

Reported Gunshots/Suspicious Activity - There were increased high visibility Police patrols throughout the island over the weekend. Stop and searches were carried out at various locations and arrests made for a variety of offences.  However, there were reports of what were believed to be gunshots heard in the Friswells Road, Devonshire area around 6:45pm Friday; the Reid Street/Burnaby Street, Pembroke area around 1:20am Saturday; and The Glebe Road/St. Monica’s Road, Pembroke area around 12:15am today (Sunday). Loud noises were also heard in the Serpentine Road/Trelawney Lane area of Pembroke around 8pm Friday.

Death of Serving Police Officer

The Commissioner of Police is deeply saddened to announce the sudden passing of Constable Andrew Thomas, aged 42 years, who succumbed to a medical condition while in his home this morning, shortly after 4:00 am. Attempts to revive the officer by attending medical services were not successful. The exact cause of death is not known at this time; however foul play is not suspected. Andrew is a well known and highly respected police officer in his 26th year of service. This news has come as a shock to the Bermuda Police Service and the Commissioner extends deepest sympathies to Andrew's family on behalf of every member of the Service.

Reported Tornado Strikes Central Parishes

Around 3:40pm today, the City of Hamilton and the central parishes were struck by a reported tornado. There are several trees down in and around the city area; however, no reported injuries. There are also reports of roof damage to Magistrates' Court, resideces in the central parishes, as well as damage reported to the Bank of Bermuda Church Street branch. Police, Bermuda Fire & Rescue Service, Works & Engineering and Corporation of Hamilton attended the scene at Magistrates' Court and are addressing the situation.

Update – Shooting Investigations

Fatal Shooting in Pembroke

The Bermuda Police Service can now confirm the death of 30 year old Shane Minors of Pembroke. Around 6:15am today, Police received a report of an unresponsive male at a South Terrace, Pembroke residence. The victim, a 30 year old Pembroke man, was subsequently pronounced dead at the scene. It appears that Mr. Minors died as a result of gunshot wounds sustained sometime between 1am and 1:15am Thursday. Inquiries into this incident are ongoing. The Bermuda Police Service extends sincere condolences to the family and friends of Mr. Minors. An autopsy is anticipated in due course.

Missing Person - The Bermuda Police Service is appealing for the public’s assistance in locating 54 year old George Bossert (pictured right). A missing person report was received on Tuesday, December 15th 2009; however Mr. Bossert, a French national, was last seen in August 2009. He is reportedly a well known chef and butcher, previously working at local restaurants. Mr. Bossert last resided at the Salvation Army Shelter on Parsons Road in Pembroke and the Emergency Housing complex in St. David’s.
